great example of an individual who understands the importance of a quality fitness regimen.

Sharon E. Hawks, MS, RD, LD, CDE
Registered Dietitian, Certified Diabetes Educator





Sharon E. Hawks began her career with the United States Air Force and served honorably for eight years. Upon leaving the military, she decided to find a career that would help others in the area of health. Initially, she decided to become a physician’s assistant (PA) but quickly changed her mind after attending her first nutrition class. Sharon realized that as a dietitian, she could perhaps have a larger impact on the health of individuals through nutrition and lifestyle training.  Sharon followed her passion for health and continued her education at Michigan State University where she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in the field of dietetics. She received her Masters of Science in Food, Nutrition and Dietetics from Central Michigan University. She has acquired extensive knowledge in the area of diabetes, women’s health, minority health, heart disease, weight management, counseling and communication.  Sharon has specialized in diabetes and is a certified diabetes educator with many years of experience in diabetes education and program development. Sharon is listed in the national directory, “Who’s Who in Diabetes Treatment, Education & Research”.

As a nutritionist, educator and motivator, Sharon is a popular and highly sought-after speaker, both locally and nationally, on topics close to her heart: African American women’s health and wellness, dietary controls for total body wellness, and diabetes education.  Health professionals, businesses, churches and the public are enthusiastic about her engaging, energetic, clear and practical delivery, and explanations of normal and distorted nutritional habits.  Sharon has persuaded numerous individuals to recognize and accept their bad habits, then to adopt a wise and sound approach to food and weight management through nutrition.  

Over the years, Sharon has conducted numerous seminars, workshops and lectures on the subjects of nutrition, health and wellness, and diabetes.  With her extensive training and wealth of experience in health and wellness, Sharon lends her expertise in medical nutrition therapy and health education to individuals, institutions, businesses and the media.  Her knowledge and widespread experience allows for the ability to work on a variety of nutrition projects with ease. Additionally, Sharon established the non-profit organization Community Health and Nutrition Group Education (CHANGE) whose primary focus is to reduce the prevalence of obesity in the African American community. Currently, Sharon instructs nursing students in the area of clinical nutrition at Bowie State University, and continues to serve her country as a Major in the DC Air National Guard where she uses her outstanding motivational speaking skills as the Chief of Military Equal Opportunity.  Recently, Sharon was appointed to the State Board of the Maryland Dietetics Association as the Public Relations Chairperson.

Sharon is the owner and director of the Nutrition and Diabetes Education Center (NADEC), located in the Greenbelt/Lanham area where she delivers nutrition education and counseling to private patients in areas of medically diagnosed diseases, such as: diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, morbid obesity, eating disorders, pre and post gastric by-pass, etc. As a consulting dietitian, she continues to conduct seminars, lectures, workshops and health fairs for an array of organizations throughout the Washington D.C. Metropolitan area.  

Sharon believes in practicing what she preaches. She takes much pride in keeping her mind, body and spirit in balance. Sharon has been a certified fitness instructor for many years and she recognizes that physical activity is as important to a healthy lifestyle as the diet and emotional well-being.

The joys of her life are her wonderful and supportive husband, Dale, and their two handsome sons, Preston and Malcolm.  Sharon’s motto is:  “You can’t do better until you know better. And now that you’ve been taught better, you have the power to do better.”
